What’s the point?Site Specific takes art off the pedestal, out of the theater, away from the museum, and reconnects it with our everyday experience - or it goes within, to reinterpret and deconstruct the formalism imposed by the institutions that art has fostered. It engages the artist with their community in new and unpredictable ways - and vice versa. Audiences encounter the work without the veil of expectation or predisposition, in fact, often by accident. It requires no ticket or program, no usher, no assigned seating, box office or curtain. Site Specific removes the trappings that have come to define the what, the where, the how and the how much, the when, and the who’s in charge. It puts the artist in the driver’s seat. It strips away the veil of artifice and asks nothing more than your interest and your attention for as long as you care to give it. For me Site Specific is really about taking art out of its usual context and creating another; a symphony on a street corner, a street artist on the stage. Feel free to drop by anytime, stay as long as you like, see something you’ve never dreamed before. We’d love to hear your thoughts, ideas, impressions and experiences. Or better yet, create your own art right here. Post a photo or a video link in the comments. Site specific lives.~Charlie Rathbun, Arts Program, 4Culture
