Alex Martin

The Daylight

THE PROJECT:

For the Herbert Bayer Earthwork 25th Anniversary, Alex Martin celebrates the beautiful earth forms in movement phrases and spatial patterns that draw the eye into the ground and into the relationship between earth, water, and sky. Audiences follow the dancer through the Earthwork on a journey through space as well as through time. Internationally renowned as one of the first environmental artworks, the Herbert Bayer Earthwork is a "composed ecology" that serves a vital public function as a dam and drainage system in the wet season and a public park in the dry season. "Are we savvy, practical engineers buttressing our built environment," asks Alex, "or busy ants piling bits of debris in the path of fate?"

Alex re-mounted this project on June 19, 2009 as a free public celebration that the Kent Arts Commission presented in coordination with the Americans for the Arts tour of Herbert Bayer's Earthworks.
